Sokchantha Pen Martinez
With a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Fresno, Sokchantha Pen Martinez developed a passion for supporting communities through meaningful and impactful work. After several years working with community-based organizations, she discovered a strong interest in the operational and behind-the-scenes aspects that help organizations thrive. She is currently continuing her education at Fresno City College, pursuing a Certificate in Accounting.
Through years of nonprofit experience, Pen has witnessed firsthand the important role Linguistica plays in creating access for multilingual communities. She has seen how language access helps individuals participate in spaces that have historically centered English speakers, empowering community members to share their stories and connect more fully with essential services and opportunities.
One of the most surprising lessons Pen has learned about language access is that interpretation and translation go far beyond simply converting words from one language to another. Effective language services require cultural understanding, context, and thoughtful communication. In many cases, certain English terms may not have direct translations in other languages, requiring interpreters to carefully convey meaning and preserve the original sentiment in a way that community members can genuinely understand.
Outside of work, Pen enjoys cooking and baking, interests that began during childhood while watching Food Network programs. Recently, she has developed a passion for learning the art of smoking BBQ — her favorite cuisine and a craft she enjoys continually refining and mastering.
Originally born in North Carolina, Pen moved to California at the age of eight. After receiving speech-language services during elementary school, she gradually lost much of her Southern accent, though occasional traces still make an appearance.
